Hunting the red stag is an unforgettable experience. It is cousin to the North American elk but with antlers that can grow up to and beyond 20 points or tines. 12 to 14 tines is average, but length, and mass often make the difference between an average and a great trophy. The province of La Pampa in the northernmost part of a region of Argentina known as PATAGONIA, is the stage for these unforgettable hunts. The terrain is a mixture of tall forest with interspersed rolling hills of grassland. The stag season starts on March 1st and ends June 30th, flights in and out are Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Charters can be arranged. On the 7 day package hunts, you fly in and start your hunt and the following week when you fly out it will be on the same day of the week that your hunt started on. Days can be added to take advantage of the excellent wing shooting or to take additional game if so desired.

The first two weeks are a good time to get a look at the stags before other hunters start shooting. The 3rd spot is a good combination of roaring and still early before many stags have been taken. The last week of March is the high point of the rut and you will see much action in this week as well as the first week of April. The roar of a red stag is an actual roar, in the ghostly mist of the early dawn you might think you are surrounded by lions. During the rut most of the hunting is done by listening for the roar and then stalking the animal on foot. After the rut in addition to stalking, the hunting is from stands, similar to the way whitetails are often hunted. Stand hunting also gives good results during the rut and stag are often seen while sitting a stand for wild boar or mountain lion. Adequate rifles for this type of hunting include but are not limited to; .270 Win, 7mm-08, 7x57, 7mm Mag., .308 Win, .30-06, .300 Win Mag., .338-06. .338 Win Mag., and .45-70.
